Traveling Apprentice
The Traveling Apprentice is a monthly column written by Carolyn McHugh, President/CEO of the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce, for the Calvert Recorder.
The premise for the articles is that Carolyn spends a day working at a local business, then writes a column for the Recorder about the experience.
Her commitment to the readers is that she’s not too proud to do whatever is assigned- -that no job is too big, too small, or too menial for her to tackle.
The stories are written in first person and she tries to sprinkle each article with a dash of humor.
Where she apprentices is her choice- -it is not dictated by the editor.
Although she has the latitude to select the business site she always wears her Chamber hat and only selects businesses that are Chamber members.
Her goal is to bring favorable attention to the member in a round-about way: she likes to refer to it as subliminal advertisement for the business.
The articles run in the Calvert Recorder on the second Friday of each month.
After an article appears in the Calvert Recorder the Chamber further highlights the business by running the Traveling Apprentice article as an insert in the Chamber’s monthly newsletter, the Navigator, and posting it on the Chamber’s website.
